Local 12 Retiree Paul Smith passed away on Saturday, July 10 2021. He was a Proud Member of Local 12 since 1991. He retired in 2019. I would normally write something about a retiree myself but when I read his obituary I thought it would be better just to reprint it. Please keep Paul and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Paul Alleyn Smith, a life-long resident of Wood-Ridge, NJ passed away on Saturday, July 10th at the age of 67 after a very courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was born on January 30, 1954 to the late William and Ruth Smith and educated in the Wood-Ridge school system where he excelled in athletics and graduated in 1972. He worked as a Union insulator with Local 12 where he formed lifelong bonds with colleagues he cherished. Paul was a loving husband to Linda Smith (DiMartino), devoted father to Kaitlin Rose and husband Harrison Kanarick, Lauren Elizabeth and fiancé Michael Rienzo, and doting grandfather to Emmeline Rose; as well as beloved Uncle and cousin, dear brother, and treasured friend. He loved being outdoors, landscaping, gardening, vacationing in Hilton Head Island for over twenty years, and was a passionate Notre Dame and Green Bay Packers football fan. He enjoyed kayaking, Scrabble, crossword puzzles, yoga, cooking, hiking, reading, and traveling with his family to see the Fighting Irish compete. His pure heart, bright smile, sense of humor, unwavering reliability, and unforgettable laugh will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. His generous spirit and quick wit will forever remain in the hearts of everyone he touched. Above all, Paul loved his family. He enjoyed coaching his daughters and attending every one of their sporting events after a long day of work and was forever their biggest fan. He had infinite adoration for his new granddaughter, who resembles him with bright blue eyes and one endearing dimple, and treasured every moment spent together. He had a deep love for history after learning of his late father’s experience in World War II and took a memorable trip to Belgium to see the Battle of the Bulge site where he bravely fought. The family will receive relatives and friends Thursday, July 15, 2021from 4-8pm at Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Avenue, Rutherford NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 16th, 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Saint Mary, 91 Home Avenue, Rutherford, NJ. Entombment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.
